This festival is celebrated as the union of Shiva with Shakti falls which comes in the month of Phalgun according to Hindu calendar, Phalgun comes in the month of February- March. This year Mahashivratri falls on March 1. It will start at 3:16 am on March 1 and end at 1:00 am on March 2.
History of Shivratri
As the marriage of Shiva and Shakti is one the most important related to the festival of Mahashivaratri. Here legends tell how Lord Shiva got married a second time to Shakti, his divine consort. Legend say that Shiva and Shakti, the day god Shiva got married to Parvati is celebrated as Shivaratri - the Night of god Shiva.Why mahashivratri is celebrated but what is the core belief for this day is that on this day Mahadeva and his love Parvati married today and started their married life.
Significance of Mahashivratri
Mahashivratri signifies love, passion and togetherness in a married life. Shiva and Shakti are two forms of one energy and it is only together that they stand complete or powerful. This represents that a marriage is all about both husband and wife being in the relationship together and emerging strong . If one goes down, the other one stands for the right.
Celebration
The celebration includesa "jaagaran", praying all nigth it is believed that all through the night doing japa is like "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the getting blessing from god shiva . Fruits, bilvapatra leaves, sweets and milk to Shiva temple , performing full day fasting with bajanas and god songs worship of Shiva, and some do meditatation and pray to shiva. Shiva temples, Shiva songs, sacred mantra of Shiva, is said all day . Worshipers praise Shiva by saying "om namah Shivaya"
